Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen yesterday claimed that the era of "legacy luxury" –products that convey status without regard to cost or resources consumed – is now at the end of its life cycle, with Audi representing the new era of "progressive luxury." This may be hard to imagine, but apparently Porsche agrees, and is now purposefully advertising the mpg of its new Panamera, and we must say, we’re surprisingly impressed.

Porsche today unveiled details of its most audacious model yet, the 2010 911 GT3 RS. The new model will be officially introduced September 17th at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Like the engine featured in the GT3, the RS bumps displacement from 3.6 to 3.8 liters. It now delivers 450 horsepower from the naturally aspirated powerplant, reaching a stratospheric 8500 rpm redline. The 15 additional horsepower over the base GT3 brings total output to 118 hp per liter from the six cylinder boxer engine. Even with all this raucous performance, Porsche claims the RS is fully suitable for everyday use, not simply for the track.

The 2010 Panamera, Porsche’s first all-new car since the debut of the Cayenne in 2002, was unveiled with lots of fanfare at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show exhibit. Undoubtedly, the Panamera’s release was criticized by some Porsche purists, as was the Cayenne, which is now Porsche’s bestselling car. The second vehicle to be created as part of a plan to reach a broader customer base, the new Panamera was designed as “a car where the Porsche experience could be shared with more than just the co-pilot,” claims Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America.
