Ed Welburn, Vice President of Global Design at GM, recently hinted that the next generation Corvette will bring back the split window design seen on the 1963 Corvette Stingray. Recently speaking to Inside Line, Welburn mentions, “The split window is something that I expect for the next Corvette. With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem.”

Last week the folks at Autocar revealed a video of a Corvette ZR1 chasing an even more exotic Lamborghini Murciélago LP-670 SV. The SuperVeloce was driven by Lamborghini’s own factory driver, while the ZR1 was driven by an auto journalist. What was most surprising and impressive was how well the ZR1 kept up with the exotic around the track. Take a look for yourself!

GM’s car czar product specialist Bob Lutz was quick to clear this up at a recent GM Media Event: the Chevy Volt is not a hybrid, it’s a range extended vehicle. So what exactly does he mean by this? The 2011 Volt will use what GM calls the E-Flex powertrain architecture. The way it differs from typical parallel hybrids like Toyota’s Prius is that the Volt never uses the gasoline engine to directly power the vehicle. The Volt is solely propelled by the electric motor, and when the batteries run low, the gasoline engine kicks in as a generator to run the electric motor. Therefore, the Volt is actually a purely electric vehicle that also runs as a serial hybrid.

2010 will mark the return of the storied Grand Sport version of the Corvette, replacing the Corvette's previous Z51 package. The Grand Sport will cominbe the Corvette's LS3-based powertrain with unique, wide body styling and race track ready suspension. The 6.2L engine produces 430 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque with the standard exhaust system.
