Ford recently announced that it will stop producing the Crown Victoria, a cop favorite, in two years. Not wasting any time, GM has announced that it wants to cash in on the void by offering its rear-wheel drive V8-powered Pontiac G8. But you thought the G8 and Pontiac were dead? Correct, so this will actually be the G8’s Aussie twin, the Holden Commodore. Whatever badge is on the car, we're sure the men and women in blue will be pleased, because unlike some of its other offerings, it’s truly a shame GM had to stop selling this car stateside.
The latest G8 was a great car, and would have been a key player in saving Pontiac if the recession hadn’t closed that door so early. While the public won’t be seeing a G8 replacement anytime soon from GM, police forces may soon have the opportunity.
GM’s new chief Fritz Henderson recently stated, “We've been working on a package for police applications. I just think that's going to work. We're pretty optimistic about it and that product will be sourced in Australia."
The Commodore will be a huge improvement compared to the outdated police-issue Crown Vic. As far as for the rest of us, all we can do is hope that GM decides to re-badge it as a Chevy. Considering how many times they bring back retro cars, we feel pretty confident that it’ll come back in the future.
