Nissan officials are reportedly throwing around the idea of bringing back the Datsun nameplate for its low cost models in emerging markets. The Nikkei newspaper, without citing sources, claims that this could happen for models retailing for under $5,000 USD.
At $5,000, these cars would appear to compete directly with tiny offerings from Tata Motors, and likely would never reach Western dealerships. For Americans looking to get their hands on a new Datsun Fairlady roadster (240Z in the US), I wouldn’t hold my breath.
The reports don’t reveal any finalized details such as if and when the name change would happen, but if so, Americans may one day see an updated Datsun logo on their vacation in Southeast Asia.
