Toyota has announced a PLUS Performance package for its 2011 Prius hybrid, but the PLUS package doesn’t include any of the terminology you’d expect: extended-range, plug-in, or lithium-ion battery pack. Instead, this upgraded Prius will debut with Toyota’s hybrid performance line from Toyota Racing Development (TRD). Let’s see what this is all about.

Now that hybrids are becoming mainstream, Toyota has realized that not all Prius shoppers want the ‘I have a hybrid’ aerodynamic egg look. For the driver looking for a sportier hybrid, there are a now a few new options.

LOOKS: First off are the aesthetic upgrades that do nothing for performance, but give the car a more aggressive look, well slightly. The PLUS Performance Package will start with a seven-piece aero kit that includes ground effects, front and rear bumper spoilers, side skirts, and a new rear diffuser. The kit was designed not only for looks, but also to reduce the aerodynamic drag coefficient, a factor that helps not only top speed but also fuel economy, a key factor for hybrid performance upgrades.

Also available are 17-inch forged alloy wheels that fit nicely with the new plastics. The wheels are fitted with lower profile 215/45R 17 tires and have a custom offset, yet still maintain the low rolling resistance standard on the other Prius models.

PERFORMANCE: Thankfully, TRD didn’t neglect actual performance upgrades. The Prius PLUS performance package includes lowering springs, which reduce ride height by 1.1 inches in the front and 1.3 inches in the back. The addition of a rear sway bar enhances turn-in feel and cornering ability, which are a much-needed improvements.

The limited edition Prius PLUS will also feature its own unique colors: Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Black and Winter Gray Metallic.

PRICING: $3,699 for Prius Two, Three, and Four models and $2,999 for the Prius Five. Ordering for the limited production 2011 Prius PLUS Performance Package will begin in July.
