Subaru STI FT-86 (086A) Concept: 250 HP, RWD, and Affordable!

Toyota and Subaru have remained tight lipped about their upcoming joint venture, the Toyota FT-86, or as Subaru calls it, the 086A. All we know is that the base model will be a lightweight, rear-wheel drive coupe with a 200 hp naturally aspirated engine. Fortunately for us, Japan’s Holiday Auto has rendered a drawing of what the tuned STI model could look like.

According to Holiday Auto, the STI version in Subaru form will most likely be fitted with Subaru’s 250 hp EJ25 2.5 liter boxer engine. The 2.5 liter would probably be naturally aspirated, but Subaru hasn’t yet eliminated a turbo option.

An STI version would sport larger wheels, tires, and brakes as well as Subaru’s well known, and quite large, rear wing. If Subaru does it right, they’ll keep the weight and price down, and be able to undercut the 370Z’s pricing while keeping up in performance.

We expect the base tuned version of the FT-86 to bow at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2010, with the STI version being introduced a year later. The new coupe will mark the first time Subaru has released a rear-wheel drive car.
